私たちは、なぜ髪を染めるのでしょう。
髪を染めるという行為は、白髪を隠すという目的から、色とりどりの髪色やさまざまな手法を用いたスタイルによって個性や自分らしさを表現するファッションツールへと変容してきました。
ヘアカラーは今や、見た目の美しさに加えて、老若男女を問わず自己表現や日常における変化を楽しむ重要な要素となっています。現代の多様な髪色には、グレイヘアに象徴される染めない選択肢も含め、年齢や性別にとらわれない生き方やアイデンティティが反映されているのかもしれません。
今日のようにさまざまな色彩が実現可能になった背景には、染毛剤開発の歴史があります。実は、染髪の基本となる化学原理は、染毛剤が誕生した時からほとんど変わっていません。この原理を活かしながら、いかに髪を傷めず、身体に影響なく安全に、かつ簡便に美しく染髪できるかの試行錯誤が、染毛剤開発の核心でした。真っ黒に染めるのみの白髪染め、脱色だけで茶髪にする技術から、髪質や体質に合わせた選択ができる現在のラインナップに至るまで、ヘアカラーのトレンドは染毛剤の進化と両輪で歩んできたのです。
本展では、「なぜ染める、なぜ染まる。」をキーワードに、髪染めの歴史や背景、髪が染まるメカニズムをわかりやすく解説し、現在の染毛技術をひも解きながら、広がり続けるヘアカラー文化を考察します。
Why do we dye our hair?
The act of dyeing one’s hair has transformed from a way of covering gray hairs to a fashion choice that expresses a person’s individuality and personality through a wide range of hair colors applied using a variety of different techniques. In addition to its aesthetic appeal, hair color has become a key element of self-expression and the joy of change in one’s daily life, whether old or young, male or female. Perhaps the diverse array of hair colors available—including the option to not dye one’s hair, symbolized by a head of gray hair—is a reflection of our lifestyles and identities, which are not defined or restricted by age or gender.
Behind the broad selection of hair colors available to us today is the history of hair dye development. In fact, the basic chemical principle of hair dyeing has remained almost unchanged since hair dyes were first invented. At the heart of hair dye development was the leveraging of this principle in a trial-and-error process to learn how to safely and conveniently dye hair in beautiful colors without damaging the hair or harming the body. From techniques involving simply dyeing gray hair jet-black, or turning black hair brown by just bleaching the hair, to the current lineup of hair dye options tailored to different hair types and features, hair coloring trends have shifted in tandem with the evolution of hair dyes.
With the key phrase of “why we dye hair, and why we get our hair dyed,” this exhibition presents the history and background of hair dyeing and the mechanism behind how it works in an easy-to-understand way. It also examines an ever-growing hair coloring culture while getting to the root of current hair dyeing technology.
